Happy Birthday USA!
The sky near my house are flaring with rockets' red glare and all of the kids are going wild. My grandparents, parents, and I, thank G-d, have seen America in its triumphs. What country in world history had our power and used it so wisely? Will my children continue to live in America the great and witness its well-deserved glory? What about my grandchildren?
The bible says that we survive when we live in fear. When we harden our hearts, we disappear. Our country's birthday, July 4, is a time for us, therefore, to think of the challenges. We dare not ignore them.
Of course, we all are concerned about the situation in Iraq. We worry also about the decline of family. Newsweek celebrated the fourth with a terrifying article about women's infidelity in marriage, now approaching the level of male infidelity. Pity the children who don't understand.
These are the old problems. I feel that there is little we can do about either the war in Iraq or the decline of family. As the Newsweek article pointed out, if women work with men all day, and at work we present ourselves in the best light, there will always be infidelity. If we stand tall for our values, there will always be people like Saddam Hussein to challenge us with his mass murder and aggressiveness.
What bothers me today, on July 4, are the new problems.
The new problems have one source. The situation in the coming years in America will not be just a battle between the radicals in the Gay and Feminist Lobbies and the family and religious people. That is an old problem, not a new one. The new problem will be much different. Note, I did not say better or worse, just different. The new problem will be a totally new environment, a new paradigm, one that has tremendous potential to go either way, and nobody know where things will end up.
The new problem is that the two pillars of America, call them right and left, used to have a clear structure. Today, they are melting. Their structure is entering a critical mass of pressure that can flip our society into new and interesting realities.
Let us begin with radical feminists. When I grew up, radical feminists knew exactly what they wanted. Now they don't. Gloria Steinem, who led young women to leave men and embrace lesbianism, finally found out at the age of 67 that she really did need a man after all. She married, and when she did, the foundations of radical feminism trembled.
Women are free to be successful in industry, but they are not terribly happy there. Increasingly, they want to raise a family and leave the rat race to the men. Women are coming to grips with the fear that they may never marry, or may never have children, or may never have the pleasure of being a real woman, unless they go in reverse.
Science used to torment religion. The latest idea in science is the Anthropic Principle. This means that the numbers in physics only make sense if a designer made them for humans. Creation, anyone? Does this mean that science is becoming religious? It means that the structure of science is melting, and expanding into heretofore forbidden dimension. Very interesting, very interesting indeed.
What about the "right" and the religious-family part of America? They, too, are melting, but in a different sense. The right religious-family people once thought of themselves as the real America. Others were aliens, to be tolerated, perhaps controlled, but the real power was with religion and family. Today, this is no longer true. Family is declining and religion is almost dead on arrival as an influence in government. Increasingly, laws and civic structure in America will be insensitive or worse to family and religious people. Gay Rights laws define clergy bible-believers as haters. Those who believe in family are teaching what some consider hate to their children. The schools are determined to fight back, and teach children to resist their homophobe parents.
The military can no longer recruit volunteers as it once could. This means, ultimately, a draft. The new draft will probably include women. This will make a mixed army that will utterly destroy any semblance of sexual morality in our country. It will place moral people either in jail or in an environment they cannot survive morally.
We thus celebrate our Birthday, July 4, knowing that as the new year unfolds, the structure of America will disappear. The left will have to come to terms with the teachings of the right, and the right will have to live under the legal lash of the left.
As this unfolds, family will suffer wrenching growing and declining pains.
It is a time for prayer.
G-d Bless America!
