Protest over Governor McGreevey’s Resignation

New Jersey Governor James E. McGreevey resigned his office on Thursday, August 12, 2004, because, as he explained, “I engaged in an adult consensual affair with another man which violates my bonds of matrimony.” Rabbi David Eidensohn, director of the National Non-Sectarian Council of Pro-Family Activists, protested the Governor’s decision. “Did King David resign when he slept with Bas Sheva?” asked the rabbi. “We sin, but we are human, and we go forward seeking to improve. McGreevey could have sought counseling for his homosexuality, and he could remain governor, and be an example for many other people in his terrible predicament," said the rabbi.

Rabbi Eidensohn noted the fact that McGreevey’s lover was a man, and the affair was homosexuality. “McGreevey was a homosexual who struggled valiantly through two marriages and two children to love his wife, and only his wife, but failed. His failure is not his alone. It is the failure of American therapists to properly publicize the availability of treatment, called conversion therapy, for homosexuality,” said Rabbi Eidensohn.

Rabbi Eidensohn noted that there are many Americans who desperately want to love heterosexually but cannot, because the American Psychological Association and the American Psychiatric Association discourage conversion therapy for homosexuals. “This refusal by therapists playing gay activist is what caused Governor McGreeevey’s tragedy and destroyed his life,” said Rabbi Eidensohn. “How many people must be shamed before we learn to help homosexuals who want to be heterosexual?” asked the rabbi.
