Religious
People Destroy Religion
By Rabbi David Eidensohn
The terrible social and cultural problems we face today, the decline of family and society, is because religious people believe that this is G-d’s world.
Can I, an Orthodox rabbi who studied the Torah for fifty years, say such a thing? Do I not believe that G-d created the world six thousand years ago and is King of the World? If so, how can I say that the problems of family and society derive from belief that this is G-d’s world? Of course, this is G-d’s world. “In the beginning, G-d created the heaven and the earth.” What do I mean?
When I tell people about the problems of the Gay Lobby, they often shrug and say, “G-d must help us,” or, “Messiah will come.” I say to them, “Don’t talk about G-d or the Messiah.” They look at me shocked. I explain: G-d wants me to fight the gays, not He. He wants people to struggle against evil, not sit around until Messiah comes.
The Psalmist put it this way, “The heavens are the heavens of G-d, and the earth He gave to mortals.” G-d gave us a world. It is our world. We make it, or we break it. If we pray and do good deeds, but don’t clean out the weeds, we destroy the world.
The Gay Lobby is happiest when religious people stay off of the streets and frequent places of worship. The Gay Lobby wants the street. The Gay Lobby wants the political process. The Gay Lobby wants the media. When religious people devote their energies to speaking to G-d instead of fighting tooth and nail against those who would seize their children, G-d is sad and disappointed. He ignores a world where religious people ignore their obligations. If we fight, G-d fights. If we pray, G-d listens and is sad that we are not fighting.
The Talmud says that when Amalek
attacked
Should G-d be mentioned in the Pledge of Allegiance? Of course He should be mentioned. The Ten Commandments must be in the Courtrooms. G-d created the world and allowed us to build civilizations. He did not allow us to deny Creation.
Whether or not G-d is in the Pledge or Courtroom, however, is not the main issue. The real question is, Where are the religious people? Are they fighting? Are they learning how to make war on Amalek, or are they sitting around reading about the latest success of the Gay Lobby?
Religious people fight hard over symbols, while they ignore the real issues. The real issue is that the Gay Lobby wants to put us in quarantine until we speak as they want us to speak. The real issue is that they are coming closer and closer to this goal every day. Meanwhile, religious people are fighting losing battles about sodomy laws, courtrooms, and now, the Pledge.
Those few people who are really active against the gays have such bitter financial problems it is a miracle that they continue. The religious world has no time, energy, or funding for them. One activist recently went bankrupt when the gays sued him. Can we wonder why the gays, with their tens of millions, are winning?
Many religious people saved a lot of money by not giving to family activists. They have an easy life. Just do nothing, and then shake your head piously when you watch the news.
If this is G-d’s world, we have to fight for it. If religious people wait for G-d, He will not be in the Pledge, the Courtroom, or many other places. Then religious people will bemoan society’s decline and blame it on G-d.
